Does temporary email protect you from phishing?
Partly. It keeps your real address away from the lists phishers buy and steal. It can’t make a fake email in front of you safe to click.
Where phishers get your address
Most phishing isn’t aimed at you personally. It goes to huge lists of addresses taken from data breaches, scraped from websites, or sold by shady marketers. The more places your real address has been, the more lists it ends up on.
If you give a small or unfamiliar site a temporary address, a later breach or sale of its data leaks an address that no longer exists. Phishing sent there goes nowhere.
What temporary email can’t do
- It doesn’t stop phishing that arrives while the inbox is open. Disposable inboxes get plenty of spam, and some of it is phishing.
- It doesn’t protect your real address, which you still use for your important accounts.
- It doesn’t stop you from entering your password on a fake website. Only you can do that.
What TempMailyo does to reduce the risk
- Scripts in email never run.
- Remote images are blocked until you choose to load them, so opening an email doesn’t confirm to the sender that the address is live.
- Attachments are removed before mail is stored, which removes a common way malware arrives.
- Links open in a new tab, away from your inbox.
A link can still lead to a fake site, so the habits below matter in every inbox.
How to spot a phishing email
- It wants you to act fast: your account will be closed, a payment failed, a parcel is stuck.
- It asks you to log in, confirm details, or pay through a link.
- The sender’s address doesn’t match the company, or is a near miss like
paypa1oramaz0n-support. - Hovering over a link shows a different website from the one the text claims.
- It’s about an account you don’t have, or an order you didn’t place.
When in doubt, don’t use the link. Type the company’s address into your browser yourself, or use its app, and check there.
A simple rule for temp mail
In a temporary inbox, you are only expecting one thing: the code or link from the site you just signed up for. Ignore everything else.
