Throwaway email for Reddit
Reddit has a long tradition of throwaway accounts for posts you don’t want tied to your main profile. A temporary inbox can help, as long as you know its limits.
Why people use throwaway accounts on Reddit
Asking for advice about health, money, work, or family is easier when the post isn’t linked to your usual username. A separate email keeps that account from being matched to your real address if Reddit, or a site you connect to it, is ever breached.
Using a temporary inbox for it
- Open a temporary inbox on this site and copy the address.
- Use it when Reddit asks for an email, or when you add one later.
- Confirm the address from this page if Reddit sends a verification email.
- Delete the inbox when you are done, or let it expire after 24 hours.
If Reddit doesn’t accept the address or no email arrives, the domain may be blocked. Use another privacy option, such as an email alias.
The catch
After the inbox ends, you can’t reset the account’s password by email. Treat it as truly throwaway: save the password in a password manager if you might come back, and don’t build up anything in that account you’d hate to lose.
Staying within the rules
Throwaways for privacy are common. Using extra accounts to vote on your own posts, evade a ban, or harass someone is against Reddit’s rules and our acceptable use policy.
Your email isn’t the only clue
A separate email doesn’t hide your writing style, the times you post, or your IP address from the site. If staying unlinked really matters, think about those too.
